A classic buddy movie about King George VI of England (Colin Firth) and Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a speech therapist from Australia, begins in 1925 and continues into the early years of World War II when England is in great need of inspired leadership.  The king’s problem is that he stammers when he speaks, especially in public, and he is meant to be the person who must energize his country to win the war.  Lionel’s challenge is to find the source of the King’s speech difficulty.  To achieve this, he first must earn the King’s trust, in this beautifully-told historical drama.  The movie also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth and Jennifer Ehle as Myrtle Logue.  Academy Award, BEST PICTURE. Rated R (118 min.) mike laib 2012.

Classroom Tips:

1. Preview both the movie and its lesson. Lesson and movie are in the same sequence.
2. Within the lesson, decide which quotes, questions, and vocabulary to focus on. Highlight or cut-and-paste content you plan to use.
3. Estimate how you'll use available time for both watching and discussing the movie.
4. Remember: Most questions on the lesson are easy for a native speaker of English to answer, so the movie itself is the answer key.
