Katherine, Mary and Dorothy were colored women. All of them were working in NASA building. They had great intelligence and they loved their jobs. Katherine had ability in computing, and she worked as a computer in one of NASA offices. Because of the color of her skin and her gender, co-workers had prejudice against Katherine. Around her office, Katherine even couldn't find a bathroom for her.

Mary was smart and really wanted to be an engineer in NASA office. She was not accepted to work as an engineer because she didn't have the degree of a college. This college only accepted white students.

Dorothy was a leader of some colored women who worked for NASA. These women need a official leader, but the structure of NASA was not clear so they could not have one. Dorothy tried to report this problem many times, but she failed by her low position.

Why is their work so important to the efforts of NASA?

Katherine did calculating job to help to decide the path of the rocket. Because of her precise and fast computing, the NASA office could efficiently accomplish the achievement of rocket. Mary helped other engineers to finish building the rocket. Dorothy learnt the knowledge of using IBM computer and managed a group of women to control this new machine. They did calculated job for NASA.

How and why does Al Harrison help them overcome the obstacles to their achievement?

Because Al Harrison thought everyone should receive same respect in NASA office. Besides, these women were hard-working and had passion. They were doing well in their jobs.

Before watched this movie, I had expected it for few time. HIDDEN FIGURES is very inspired and meaningful. It faced the real social conflict which was between races and genders. And it chose the views of who were discriminated, which can express the emotion and the theme in a strong way. What's more, this film was based on true stories. Considerable story lines clearly showed the life of three 'hidden figures' to me. I could feel the strong sense of that time and understand characters' difficulty. My favorite part of this movie is they fight against environment for themselves. These women should be honored and should be received high respect.

Teacher's note: The author of the above comments seems quite inspired by Hidden Figures in a manner intended by the writers and director of this wonderful film. I too am inspired by both the film and by this kind of response. It all tells me that there's hope for a better and better world, and that we have some power to make this happen. It is hard to imagine now that Afro-American people were segregated when using the restroom or even when drinking coffee. Also, I know that a lot of time has not passed since women obtained the right to vote. Even they-Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan-have two kinds of features.

Even though they had the same capacity as the white men, one person was not allowed to be a[n] engineer, and another person was not able to be promoted to a supervisor, and the other person was not recognized because of their gender and skin color. They eventually overcame the discrimination, but if there had not been the discrimination from the beginning, they might have achieved much more outcome.

How and why does Al Harrison help them overcome the obstacles to their achievement?
He eliminated the discrimination [which] existed in NASA. What the movie shows is that he removed the segregation of using restroom according to skin color. Also, he evaluated people with not skin color and gender, but their abilities.

Teacher's note: For me, growing up in America, it is nearly impossible to believe that such discrimination existed here for centuries, deeply embedded in our DNA. The perpetuation of such behavior is sometimes referred to as a vicious cycle, one that is extremely difficult to break, for both race and gender. It has been gratifying to note that there have been great strides made in the latter half of the 20th century, but that there is still much progress to be made here is America. They had been discriminated against because of African-American mathematicians. they wanted to become the first African-American female engineer but it was not accepted in NASA because of the regulation. Also, their opportunities for advancement were limited cue to their race.

Al Harrison needs a mathematician like a super computer. Johnson was selected. However, she did not do a good job because of racial discrimination. So, he tried to abolish segregation such as breaking down the “colored bathroom” sign.

1-First, race effects them massively because people treat them with prejudice and hatred due top their natural skin tone. Second Gender has impacted their motivation since men think that they're superior to their fellow females so when a female is far more superior and more qualified at mathematics and physics the men feel emasculated and powerless which leads them to want more power.

2-AI Harrison wanted a super computer and a calculator that is fully qualified to complete the task of sending a spaceship to outer space and with that he hired the best mathematician in NASA to help them achieve their goals.

3- Their work benefited NASA in ways that they couldn't have imagined, from helping organize the committee to propelling a rocket to outer space, their efforts and contributions to NASA and science will go down in the history books forever.

I really enjoyed this movie and drew inspiration from it.

they were a part of one of the biggest achievements nasa has ever made at that time.

This movie talks to us about one of the most unforgettable periods in history, when African Americans were suffering from discrimination in the US. It not only brings to our notice this tragic period in time but it also addresses and talks about some of the very sensitive but crucial topics in the world, such as women rights in not only in law, but in the eyes of society. It intentionally addresses these two, very interesting topics in a very sophisticated manner for the intention to bring to life the memories of the crucial period the African Americans went through and are currently living (or struggling).

It introduces three genius women that work for NAS, which is also very interesting because that specific situation by it self talks to society in todays world right in the face and says that even in one of the most difficult periods in history these people (African Americans), the people that were least expected to do well, are able to sock the world with their capabilities. This movie is tremendous in many ways, some of which is for it's symbolic representation of human rights, human potential, patriotism, strength, and much much more.
