In April 1994, the assassination of President Juvenal Habyarimana triggered a civil war and genocide in Rwanda.
Rusesabagina, who was born a Hutu father and a mother and a Tutsi himself married to a Tutsi, fled with his family at the Hotel des Mille Collines.
Surrounded by the Interahamwe militia, the hotel offers 1,268 Tutsi refugees or other moderate Hutus.
When refugees are under threat from the hotel, he tried to reach her by fax the White House, the United Nations, or the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The innkeeper and his family moved to Belgium in 1996.
Teacher's note: Well written essay that reads like a biography of the real Paul Rusesabagina rather than the character we meet in the movie. Much of the information above is not presented in the film, so I'd guess it was researched from another source. I wonder why you did this? Still, it is a good piece of writing, well organized in chronological order. Thanks for posting. --mike
