I think the movie was great. They did a good job with the costumes, the cars, and the the decorations. Also, they showed how NYC was in the 1920's and that was fascinating.

Gatsby and Tom were very different. Gatsby, which represented the new money, liked to give parties and to show off what he had from wealth. However, Tom was very nonchalant and was the opposite of Gatsby. He didn't like giving parties at all because he was born to be rich. NY's life was very different, [;] alcohol was banned and there weren't many cars in the streets. Finally, I think Gatsby lost Daisy because of his insistence and impatience. Although he was stubborn at the end of the movie, but he didn't deserve to die.

Thanks

Teacher's note: Thank you for being first to post. I'm glad you liked "The Great Gatsby." It's a personal favorite. Gatsby was insistent, but about what, specifically? Good post.

Tom was born rich but Gatsby was born poor. Gatsby struggled to be a rich and finally achieved the enormous wealth. So both of them became rich people but their behaviors were totally different. Tom didn't want to be spotted by others and he just lived his quiet and peaceful life. But Gatsby always wanted to show his wealth, so he threw large parties and owned a big yellow car. Tom represents the old rich and Gatsby the new rich. To the old rich, the wealth they have and the high soical status is so natural. However, to the new rich, their wealth is the consequence of their effort and has been their goal. So they want to show others their success and brag about it.

I think the old rich don't like new riches in the movie because they want to keep their social status and don't want the others to be in the same position. They emphasize the tradition of wealth and think they're somewhat special people. However, new riches like Gatsby attempted to fight against them and wanted to be equal. In the movie Gatsby failed, but in history, as time went by, old riches might have [been] defeated.

I love this movie very very much. My major is English Literature so I read the book version in my class but I still prefer the movie version so I watched it 4-5 times. I love the soundtracks by Jay-Z. Especially "Young and Beautiful" is a great song and always makes me sad. I always wonder whether Gatsby's love for Daisy is a sincere love or that it was just his goal and ambition to become the old rich. Maybe it can be both... Anyway, his passion always touches me. I didn't get bored at all when I watch it even though it was not the first time. I love the actors/actresses' acting and their clothes, and I think Daisy is so so pretty. Great movie. The Great Gatsby ♥️

Teacher's note: Thank you author for a GREAT post, so insightful and detailed. You must know the story of Gatsby very well, and still there are lingering questions about his character. Have you ever seen the 1974 version with Robert Redford? The portrayal of Gatsby and the movie style are quite different. Much appreciation for touching bases with "The Great Gatsby."

Leonardo Dicaprio is one of my favorite actors, so there is no wonder that I liked the movies so much. What really stood out for me is the cinematography, it was impressive and I wished if we saw the movie in 3D. I liked how they showed us how New York city looked in 1920's, it seems fascinating to me.

Teacher's note: I long for more detail from this author. Yes, "The Great Gatsby" would look even more splendid in 3D. It appears to have been framed in 3D though I don't know if the theatrical version was in 3D. Anyone know? Thanks for posting.

I could enjoy the movie, "Great Gatsby".

Gatsby, who represent new rich is kind of different from Tom, who represent old rich. They have been different since they were born. Gatsby was born at a extremely poor family. On the other hand,Tom's family was already rich when Tom was born. Gatsby has been struggling to be rich during his life while Tom was rich in whole his life. Thus, their life styles should be different naturally. Gatsby has spent a lot of money by holding luxury parties. Tom did not spent money like Gatsby even though Tom is one of the rich guy.

In 1920s, I could be feeling that "This is the United States" because everything was gorgeous and rich people did not care [about] spending money so much. I could guess the NY was the city of money at that time. However, I sometimes think about the difference of life-standard such as people who live in around the gus station.

I do not believe Gatsby deserves to be killed even if he could not stand against the abuse of Tom. This movie was totally fun and good to learn the United States in 1920s.

Thanks.

Teacher's note: A great post. I especially like how this author notices the matter-of-fact differences between Gatsby and Buchanan. In the 1920's, before the "Great Crash," New York was probably the place to be, the center of the known universe. I wonder if it's the same today. Thanks.

Hello movie lovers!! I had never watched The Great Gatsby before[,] and I admit that the movie is a lot better than I expected. The story takes place in The United States in 1922. Tom Buchanan is a rich man who inherited the wealth of his family and married a beautiful girl called Daisy. However, even though he is “happily married”, he was a womanizer and doesn’t even care to hide it from his wife.

Jay Gatsby is a war veteran who fell in love with Daisy five years earlier. The fact that he was poor back then tore them apart. Jay always thought he was born to be great and struggled to achieve his dream. When he finally became a wealthy man, he spent his money throwing huge parties and showing off his wealth to get Daisy’s attention. Gatsby and Tom represent the new rich and the old rich in America, respectively. The battle between them over a woman represents the battle between the old money and the new money in that decade.

Gatsby’s love for Daisy beoames almost an obsession. He would do anything for her. It got clear to me when he took the blame for killing Tom’s lover (Myrtle) while Daisy [was] left unpunished. However, Jay’s unconditional love led him to his ruin because Myrtle’s Husband thought he [would] revenge his wife by killing Gatsby!

This end to the Great Gatsby was totally unfair in my opinion, because Jay could do anything for love while Daisy was playing him the whole time! She didn’t even go to his funeral! I felt really sorry for Gatsby because his struggle to become a successful man was in vain.

Although the movie is about a story that supposedly happened many decades ago, the modern touch the director gives to the film definitely caught my attention. I really enjoyed the soundtrack with contemporary songs and the movie is visually beautiful: the costumes, the scenario, the makeup, the visual effects… To sum up, I love everything about this movie, but the tragic end!!

Thank you for reading my review!

Thanks.

Teacher's note: A well-deserved thanks are extended to this gracious movie lover and author for such a thoughtful and insightful overview and opinion piece of "The Great Gatsby." I agree that throwing in a few modern twists in the form of music and visual style somehow fulfills the purpose of drawing us ever nearer to another time. What a touch of movie-making brilliance!

This is my second time to watch this movie and it's really a great movie. The Great Gatsby talks about Gatsby's life in 1920's by Nick's vision. Jay Gatsby, who represented the new money in 1920's, desired to show his money to people by holding big parties. However, Tom Buchanan, who represented the old money, was born in rich family and tended to be conservative.

In 1920's, people chased for the richness. Old money had higher respect than new money so that people, including Daisy, prefer Tom more than Gatsby. That's one of the reason[s] that Gatsby held big parties every weekend to show his power and desire for Daisy's love. But those parties didn't draw Daisy's attention. Daisy, like most of the people in 1920's, had the same thoughts that old money was better than new one.

So, I think this was the biggest reason that she couldn't go back with Gatsby again. For Gatsby, he used his whole life to prove that he was better than old money, but nobody really appreciated him. At the end, Nick, who was born in[to a] rich family but not like them, finally accepted and praised him which made Gatsby's life more complete. I think Nick's words were just like an identity and a redemption before he died. At least he died in confidence.

Thank you for sharing this great movie!

Thanks.

Teacher's note: I think this is the first time for sharing "The Great Gatsby" in class. It has certainly been my pleasure. From reading the above post, I get the feeling that the author enjoyed "The Great Gatsby" even better the second time. I've viewed it several times and always enjoy it. Thanks for a cool post.

I saw the Great Gatsby before,so this is my second time. It is a famous movie I really like it. But I have a totally different view about this film when I saw it again. The first time I saw the great Gatsby, I was attracted by the mansions, parties, beautiful dresses, and the music.

This time I focused on the story details. It is a sad story, rich and poor class, love and heartless[ness], lots of mammonist. I don't like Daisy. When Gatsby met Daisy again, Daisy knew he was a rich and prestigious gay now. And Daisy's husband didn't love her very well but Gatsby loves her deeply. So daisy choose gatsby as her paramour. but Daisy only loves money. when daisy's husband told her gatsby's money is illegal and gatsby is not as rich as we saw, daisy feels regret. {SPOILER ALERT} In the end, gatsby was killed when he was waiting daisy and helping her covering up murder. At that time Daisy gone with her rich husband.

Another part I remember is a poor class's village which is between west egg and new town. The rich class is high school with money and hot dates. Poor class is not have enough money to live.

In the begin of the film, nick loved wall-street, which is his dream job. but now his american dream became a dark, eerie paintings.

Teacher's note: I like how this author expresses a different take on the characters. It needs to be mentioned that a particular attention to GPS would edit up this work of writing. Still, there is some cool stuff here. According to this author, Daisy, despite her beauty, is somewhat shallow in character. Has anyone else noticed this flaw? Thanks for a nice post.

"The Great Gatsby" I have never watched this movie before. When I knew that we will watch this movie in the class, I was excited!!! This movie is taking about the love story in New York in 1922. It has many difference between the old rich and new rich, and also between Gatsby and Tom. The old rich has different way in their social interaction then the new rich.

Also, there has many difference between Gatsby and Tom. Gatsby is a man who really in love with Daisy that even he knew she already changed. Tom is a man who has a mistress that even he already married with Daisy. [The] Producer used fancy color in this movie that makes screen looks gorgeous (ex:cars, clothing, lights buildings, dresses....etc). For the end of this movie, I think [that I] felt sad because Gatsby's love is too pure that [it] makes him sacrifice his life.

I love this movie and I will looking for another chance to watch it again.

Thanks for your sharing and reading. :)

Teacher's note: Thanks for a grand summary/setup of "The Great Gatsby". I like your comparison of Tom and Jay, such very different wealthy men.

I think Gatsby deserves the money he gets, I believe that if you work hard and get something, you deserve it. Gatsby was born poor, but he did the impossible and became rich, although it was a shady way, I still think he deserves it.

Teacher's note: Good ideas, good start, more detail, please. Thanks for posting.
