Mad About Movies - Fall 2013.1: 21

Postby DavidC » Thu Oct 17, 2013 6:57 pm

CARS and 21 are both versions of a "coming of age" drama: a story in which the protagonist gains life experience and makes the transition from child to adult in at least one essential way. Thinking of the two movies with this in mind, identify one way in which both protagonists (Light'ning McQueen and Ben) "grow up." What is one important life lesson that both characters learn? Write two or three sentences describing a scene from each movie that shows their changes.

Both characters learn that being fancy on the outside to be able to show-off to others is not genuine happiness. In the movie "Car", Light'ning McQueen starts to like the kind of friends and sponsors that he did used to consider shameful, and this is shown in the scene which McQueen is very happy to see his friends at the last race. Ben learns his lesson when he comes back from Vegas and finds out that he had lost everything including all his money.

Both movies cars and 21 have similar situation to change main character's mind. In cars, Lightning has changed his mind when he lost his friends and team and he became alone. Then, he noticed the importance of relationship with other people. Also, in 21, Ben had become rich, but he lost his friends and money when he came back from Vegas. However, he realized that the most important thing for him was to enroll Harvard Medical school, then he could overcome his serious situation. Both protagonists could be better than before in the end of both movies.

The most obvious in common between Lightning McQueen and Ben this two characters is the talent they owned from the beginning of their story; however , they both have felt ashamed to be honest towards people when they had gotten more attention and reputation.
"Fame and reputation might make you happy, but friendship and trustfulness make your life priceless."
In the movie "The Cars", Lightning McQueen has changed his point of view for his racing life when he was in the final race. Compared to his first race, now he realized how important the friendship and trustfulness is. So does Ben in the movie "21".
In the movie" 21", Ben has adjusted his point of views for his life achievement. He had been obsessed by those fancy spotlights in his Vegas life for a while especially when he tried to lie to his friends and his mom. However, after he noticed that there is nothing left in his life when he managed to get his real life back, he finally realized how great it is to have his personal life achievement at the end of the movie.

Both of the protagonists have learned to give value for the friends that they have and learn with them.
McQueen never listen to the people around him, in the first scene he blew a tire and almost lost the race because of that.
Ben when he make the new "cool" friends he forgot about his old friends, we can see that in the scene that he bought the wrong device for the project of them, wich was very import for his friends.

After both of them are successful, Macqueen is a famous race player and Ben becomes rich because of understanding how to count. They seem to be arrogant, and then they have become failed. When they are at downs, there is a woman who does't give them up and to be their back up. They have gone through ups and downs. Learning how to deal with problems which mean where to fall down, where to rise again.

Both Ben and MaQueen grew up in different ways but learned the same thing which is fame and money cannot make you happy and satisfied with your life. They now value the importance of love and friendship and that success will be achieved easily by having real friends and supporters.

Ben and Lightning McQueen have many similarities between each other. First, we can see that both characters are young, but very talented. Lightning McQueen is a sensational race car, and Ben is a kind guy and exceptionally intelligent. Both are pursuing an ultimate goal: for Lightning McQueen, winning the Piston Cup means everything; as for Ben, it is going to Harvard Medical School that matters the most. In order to achieve these goals, though, they both have to face some difficult situations. In the end, they both find from their mistakes that arrogance and fame can only bring unhappiness.
