It was my first time to watch this movie. I like Tom Cruise, so I have watched some of his action movies before, but I haven’t seen such a human drama. I usually do not watch such kinds of movie, so it was a good opportunity to watch.

After I watched the [first] half of this film on Tuesday, it made me feel tired. This is because Charlie did everything he wanted, such as kidnapping. He commanded everyone, and if they did not listen, he shouted many times. Although Raymond is autistic and Charley's brother, Charlie did these things. However, when I watched the rest of the film, my feeling became good.

Gradually, as Charlie knew about Raymond, Charlie's behavior changed. For example, he tried to listen to Raymond’s talk and take care of him. The number of Charlie's smiles increased instead of shouts. He was only thinking about Raymond’s heritage at the beginning, but by the end, Charlie became a sympathetic person. It made my heart very warm and [I] leaned many things about how I need to live with people. I would like to watch this kind of drama more.

Thank you!!

Teacher's note: What this author describes is what I have heard called the "character arc". In other words, how the character changes throughout the movie. In a good story, there is almost always a character arc because something happens, and the character is left with a consequence. When Charley "kidnaps" his brother, he has no idea what he just took on. But as we now know, this "problem" actually becomes Charley's salvation, and the beauty of the story is that the salvation is reciprocal. Thanks for being the first to post.

Raymond was sent to the hospital because of his condition. He was diagnosed with Autism a condition where a person loses their brain ability to function fully. When he was a child his dad thought that he tried to heart or kill his little brother inside the bathroom and this is the main reason he was sent to the hospital.

Raymond and Charley found salvation in Las Vegas. It was the idea of Charley that they start playing Black Jack. Raymond was so good at counting cards that he won almost $100 k in Las Vegas. This relieved the tension that Charley had due to the debt that he had.

At the end, both brothers make a good connection. They went through a lot together from the hospital kidnapping to Los Angeles by road. Charley promised his brother Raymond that he would visit him every two weeks and this shows that the connection was established.

The movie is really worth watching. I liked how first Charley started at (on) the wrong foot and then throughout the movie that changed to a caring- loving relationship.

Teacher's note: Great post! Thorough and clear, easy to comprehend. "Started out at the wrong foot" is a useful expression which means . . . having a bad start with a new acquaintance. Funny thing about these expressions, they need to be said verbatim or they may sound "funny." For this one, there is one little preposition that most native speakers would replace ("at" with "on"). Otherwise, perfect. Thanks for posting.

As many American films this film [is] about relationship between family members or other types of relationships. It doesn't matter. Anyway it is about relationships. And I like it. At the beginning of this film we have been seeing a young businessman, who liked money. Charlie Babbitt is going to importing four Lamborghinis to Los Angeles for resale.

Soon his dad died and left his millions to a mysterious trust fund. After that Charlie decided to solve this problem. Once he said to his girlfriend, Susanna: "When I was a kid and got scared, the Rain Man would come and sing to me" When she asked: "Where is the Rain Man now?" He said: "I just grew up". Ironically Charlie Babbitt learned for the first time that he has a brother, Raymond. Later we saw that Raymond was Rain Man!

His brother was in the hospital, he was autistic. Charlie took his brother out of the hospital and drove with him to Los Angeles thinking it will [would] get him half of their father's money. With them was his girlfriend, Susanna. Charlie was selfish as all businessmen [are]. He didn't think about his brother, he thought about money. One day Susanna said him: "You use me, you use Raymond, you use everybody. After that she left him with his brother .

The fact that she left them pushed Charlie to the care of his brother. He learned about his abilities to account. They won about $80000 in Las Vegas. Charlie attached to his brother. The meet with Dr. Bruner showed it, when the doctor offered him $250000 to walk away from Raymond, Charlie refused. He said, that he is no longer upset about what his father left him, but he wants to have a relationship with his brother.

In the final scene we saw that Charlie tried to stay with brother. We saw sad final scene, when his brother was leaving from him by train Raymond was returning to the mental institution. Charlie promises Raymond that he will visit in two weeks.

Teacher's note: What I like about this post is that it pinpoints the exact plot-point moments that change the course of the story. The fact that Susanna leaves Charley turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to Charley because, as this author points out, he becomes a better person as a result. Thanks, author, for posting.

Actually, I like Tom Cruise's action movies, so I've seen many times his movies but I've not seen his 'drama' movies. So It is my first time to watch his 'drama movies'. And it is really good. Actually before, I've watched kind of this movies such as 'The Intouchables', it is also perfect.

And in the first part (we watched on Tuesday), Charlie is just scared for Rain man, because he is kind of selfish. He does whatever he wants at his office and after meeting Rain man even kidnapping.

So after seeing first part, I feel something bad, but after seeing second part, I change[d] my mind. In the second part, he is changed for example, he asks what does Rain man want to eat every time and ones, Rain man wants to watch TV show, so Charlie makes situation to watch TV show even though he does kind of illegal.

And for me, the best thing is listening his words for example, Rain man keeps saying 'who's first' until that I'm boring, but finally Charlie explains about that and makes jokes with Rain man. So I was impressed by this story.

Thank you!

Teacher's note: Several authors have commented on how the first part of Rain Man leaves them with a bad feeling because Charley starts off as a pretty nasty fellow. By the second half, we learn how his autistic brother can have such a strong impression on Charley that his nasty habits actually go away, and he becomes a better person. There's hope for all of us. Thanks for posting.

In this movie, I was impressed by some scenes. The casino and the dance with Charley in Las Vegas, and the elevator date, and driving.
It was really nice to see Raymond drive the car with Charley and Charley's girlfriend (sorry forgot her name!). These scene[s] showed me Raymond had happy time with his brother while kidnapping.

Actually, the doctor's decision has no wrong point. Raymond has difficulty in living in society, so hospital help[s] him live safely. However, we could see Raymond having fun while traveling with his brother. I think this end (go back to hospital) made Las Vegas scene more impressive. Because it was limited time, Charley noticed that he likes Raymond. I like this movie. I want to see it several times. Thank you!!

Teacher's note: You are most welcome. It is my pleasure to share a cool movie with students, especially when they may have been too young to catch it the first time around. Some of the older films are classic and deserved to be remembered. This is why Rain Man is on MoviesGrowEnglish.com. Thanks for reminding me and for a good post!

It is really unique and unexpected story; in other words, you want to achieve a particular goal weather [it] is good or not, and dramatically you change your mind and accomplish another target. That [is] exactly what happens for Charlie Babbitt whose father passes away and leaves his money to a trust fund. Not only does this situation make him angry, but also he learns that he has a brother whose name is Raymond.

His brother has a rare disease called autistic savant, which means learning difficulty. On a long road trip from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, Charlie knows a lot about his life from his brother more than when he lived with his father. He tries to get at least half of his father’s money, and he uses his brother to earn some money. However, he learns the real meaning of how to be selfless. Thus, Cincinnati fights to get custody of his brother. He changes his goal. He wants his brother with him. This act shows us how Raymond changes his brother even though he does not realize what he does.

Raymond is like the rain that beats Charlie’s heart to clean selfishness and grow the love.

Teacher's note: There's a song that says, "when the rain washes you clean, you'll know." That's Rain Man. Interesting how this author points out how the protagonist's goal changes during the course of the movie. How often does this happen? Especially in a Hollywood movie? OK, maybe more than we realize, but still a good point. Thanks for posting.

Rain Man: Heart-warming movie

Nowadays, many people too much care about money. Charlie did too. He just cared about money from his father. When he met his brother first time. He thought [about] how to take money from his brother. However, after they spent Hedays [with] each other, Charley's mind was getting different. Feeling sorry for his brother becauase their parents had brought Raymond to hospital. The parents really worrled that Raymond would be hurting Charley. Charley tried to live together with his brother but laws blocked them. They felt connecting each other and they truly become sibling.

While I watched this movie, I felt thanking to god because I am normal like others. I changed my mind when Charley showed his pure mind. He did not care about money, not like us. I regretted myself. In this world, here are more important things, such as health, love, and family. After I watched, I thought what important things are. Now, I will going to follow valuable things in the world.

Teacher's note: I feel so honored that Rain Main had such a positive effect on this author. I wonder about "the laws blocked them"? I wonder if this author means that Raymond would have been better to stay with Charley, but he wasn't allowed to? Or that the laws were actually in Raymond's best interest? Thanks for an inspiring and provocative post.

Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors, but I have never watched his drama movie. I was not interested in this movie at first, but I gradually concentrated on this movie.

Raymond is a autistic patient, and he inherited a lot of money. Charlie didn't know that he has a brother, and he kidnapped him, and attempted to intercept his money.

Later, Charlie realized that Raymond is Rain Man. When Charlie knows that Raymond is Rain Man, I was surprised too.
After that, he feels brotherly affection to him, and he tries to become intimate with him. Finally, Charlie truly wants to take care of him, but Raymond goes back to hospital.

I wondered something after finished this movie. Raymond finally goes back to hospital. Is it the best way for him? Or Is it the best way that he lives with Charlie? I don't know until now. But I was very impressed from this movie. Thanks.

Teacher's note: My main suggestion for this author is to use a logically-consistent time frame. Don't skip randomly between past and general time (as many student writers do). Otherwise, I like the summary. It's clear with good use of vocabulary. Finally, we're left with a question that is difficult to answer. Thanks for posting!

I've watched this movie before, yet this beautiful story impressed me again.

People's court, big gaining at casino, elevator date, dance with Charlie and Raymond, Raymond's drive, affair at crossing, maple syrup before pancake, first joke of Raymond, all of them made me feel "How beautiful this world is!". A little bit strange words and customs of Raymond made us laugh and warmed our hearts. And also, warmed Charlie's heart gradually. As this story went on, Charlie's smile became natural and bright.

On the other hand, Raymond became more like human being. At first, everything outside of his routine was scary for Raymond. His life was restrained by his customs systematically, but Charlie changed it. It was unbelievable things that he dates with beautiful woman, drive a high-class car, and say jokes.

These mutual changes make me feel that the relationships of human-beings are very beautiful. Now, I really miss my sisters because of "Rain Man"!! Anyway, thank you for selecting this movie!

Teacher's note: Wow! I am moved to tears by this author's post. Many of the best moments of the movie are distilled into this finely tuned report. Makes me want to watch it again immediately. I am glad this author was so touched by Rain Man. Thanks for a coolest contribution.
