it's not easy to say that back in 1930s people were respectful with each other, especially with women. as we saw in the clip the former prisoner claimed that she is his wife, so that leaves her with no right to do any action without being allowed by the husband. when the former prisoner challenged the other man, they were fighting over the ownership of the lady with her children. Anyhow, nowadays we can see that women can decide for herself whether there is winner in fistfight over her or not.

Teacher's Note: This is a sharp observation that Penny is treated somewhat like chattel. I'd go so far as to say that she treats Vernon Waldrip in much the same way. He's basically a meal ticket. I guess in those times there wasn't much room for respect when folks wondered where the next meal would come from. Thanks for a nice thought piece.
