This is a story about a true love. The main theme, true love is depicted through two heroines; Elsa, princess of the country, who possesses magic powers producing ice and snow, and her younger sister Anna, who sets out on the journey to return her to their country, and save the country by ending the winter.
Elsa, who has magic powers to produce snow and ice, accidentally injures Princess Anna, her younger sister. Anna got over by asking help from trolls. However, instead of healing her, Anna loses her memories about Elsa’s magic. Not hurting anyone again, Elsa is forced to stay in her room almost all of the time, and grows separately with Anna. Furthermore, their parents dying from a storm, there is no one who knows about Elsa’s secret about the magic.
After some years later, Elsa, who comes of age, is supposed to be the queen, and the coronation is held in their castle by opening the closed gate. Elsa tries to control her powers the day, however, the powers has been already out of control. On the other hand, Anna, who has been longing for touching the outer world, falls in love with Hans, other country’s prince. Anna introduces him to Elsa as a fiancé. Of course Elsa refuses to accept their sudden marriage. They argue about the marriage and complain about the situation Anna has been facing for a long time. The argument makes Elsa expose her powers in public. Elsa, who is in a panic, runs from the castle, but her upset emotion brings deep winter. In order to return Elsa to her country, and stop the winter, Anna sets off the Journey.
I like this movie because the structure of this movie is perfect. Many famed movies and successful movies usually follow the structure, called “three act structure”, and this movie follows it perfectly. Perfectly. Most Disney movies also follow it usually though, this one is rather perfect than others. For example, Big Hero 6, a Disney film which got the Oscar 2014, follows it. It is famed. However, even it does not reach the perfection of Frozen because it’s some points which should be key points advancing the story are bit digressed or weak. Even such the famed movie is not perfect. But Frozen is perfect.
What points are perfect? Everything. For example, the length of each part of the structure is perfect, and the action points, which function to advance the story naturally work enough. Of course the fun and games, which is a point to meet audience’s expectation are perfect such as the song, Let It Go, or Oraf joining Anna’s party. To contain all the elements in a certain time is very hard. But this film does it actually. I cannot explain all about the three act structure because this page is not for about that, however, I can say this movie can be a perfect example of three act structure. Therefore, I like it. I admire it.
Teacher's note: Thank you mumumumumumumuraara for this awesome publication, worthy of an advanced writing student! I was especially attracted to the comments about the structure of Frozen. I studied screenwriting at UCLA and ended up writing three screenplays. During this process I discovered movie structure from a writing perspective. There is great wisdom in the "classic structure" where there is a beginning, middle, and end--wisdom in the sense of creating a satisfying film-watching experience.
So I find what you say above to be true. And the result is predictably true--a most satisfying movie. Those guys over at Disney sure know what they're doing. BTW I think
Ron Howard is another guy who is really smart with film structure. I plan to show one of his films in the class soon. Any questions?
