Young Nim (Abigail Breslin) lives alone with her scientist father (Gerard Butler) on a small island in the far-away Pacific Ocean.  She is very happy with her life and her animal friends until one day her father disappears in a storm.  Meanwhile in San Francisco, Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster), an adventure writer, is having trouble finishing her next novel.  When she makes a web connection with Nim and realizes that Nim is in trouble, Alexandra decides to rescue her, if only she can find enough courage to leave her house and travel to the far side of the world.
