In a film inspired by a true story of great courage, Melvin Tolson (Denzel Washington) is a college debate-team coach in a time and place where "they lynch Negroes." Against all odds, he guides a crew of African American debaters all the way from a small town in Texas to the great halls of Harvard University in a hero's search for the definition of human equality. Dr. James Farmer (Forest Whitaker) is the moral voice of the story and father of the team's youngest debater.
